image I’ve been wanting to start a personal blog for sometime now. A place that I can rant about things that don’t relate to business & technology or web development. A place that I can be a conservative and arrogant loud-mouth. A place that I can just be myself.

I have postponed and postponed (fancy talk for procrastination).

Well, I finally found a reason to start.

I am going on a diet and I am going to chronicle what I am doing. I don’t care if you are interested. I don’t care if you read, but if I have some public accountability, I will do better.

What is different about this diet than the others I have done?

Well, I’ll tell you. continue reading...

image Well, the first day of my new low calorie diet. I actually started the program a couple of days ago, but this is the first day of severely limiting my diet.

I must say, it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.

My doctor prescribed some appetite suppressants and I decided I wanted to try today without one. I am a little hungry right now as I write this post, but I was less hungry today than I thought I would be. I’ll likely take a suppressant in the morning just to make the day a little easier on me.

The meal in the picture at the left was my lunch. I actually took this picture before I put it into little sandwich bags to take the office. I was surprised how much food it was for a 190 calorie meal. continue reading...

strawberries When I went to bed last night, I was starving hungry. I finally got to bed about 11:30 and I was more tired than typical at that time of night. I usually get to bed around 12:30 or 1am and get about 6 1/2 hours of sleep and feel great. Last night I was exhausted.

I slept about 8 hours and woke up feeling great. I wasn’t hungry. In fact, I didn’t even eat my breakfast (strawberries pictured at left) for over an hour.

I decided to take an appetite suppressant to see how that worked out. I have some the doctor gave me and I only took a half of one. I really wasn’t hungry until about 3pm or so. I had ended up eating lunch about an hour later than I planned and remembered about 3pm that I had an apple for a snack.

I would say the appetite suppressant worked just fine.

I assume that the effects of it have worn off and now, at 10pm, as I write this post, I am not really any more hungry than when I was eating a lot more than I do now. They say that one of the effects of this diet is that your appetite is naturally suppressed… they also say that can take a week or two. continue reading...

asparagus and chicken I got a great night sleep and woke up with no appetite. I actually didn’t even eat my breakfast until about 9:30am.

My lunch was great. You can see how much food I had in the picture at the left. that is a standard fry pan. It was a lot of food. I put chicken and asparagus with some garlic, onion, pepper, salt and crushed red peppers. It had a little bit of a kick to it. It made my nose run and eyes water.

It was so much food that I almost didn’t finish it. Then, I didn’t have an appetite all afternoon. I didn’t have my afternoon snack. When dinner time came around, I couldn’t even eat my full amount of food because I still wasn’t hungry.

I did get my appetite back at about 9pm so I had my snack then and it was pretty darn good.

I am pretty hungry now as I write this post so who knows what will happen tomorrow.

I got a nice 30 minute nap in the middle of the day so I didn’t feel tired at the end of the day like I have the first two days. continue reading...

chicken and onion Again I had a great night sleep and woke up with no appetite. I didn’t eat my breakfast until about 9:30am.

My lunch was great. I am a big fan of Italian food so I mixed ground beef with fresh tomatoes. I added oregano, basil, thyme, garlic, minced onions, bay leaf, pepper and sage. It was very good. Only missed the pasta. I didn’t make it into a full sauce because that would have been weird with no pasta. As a result, I could taste the tomato among all the flavors. I didn’t take a picture of it because it really didn’t look that appetizing, but it sure tasted good… and filled me up nicely.

For dinner we grilled chicken and I grilled some onions for myself. Sorry Jen for the breath.

This diet isn’t so hard. I am not a big fan of vegetables, so I am trying to get creative in how I eat them. continue reading...

appleOne of my daily staples on this diet has become an apple. Now that I am forsaking all sugar for this diet, fruit takes on a new meaning.

I figured out today that I am only hungry before I eat and after I stop eating. Other than that, I am not that hungry.

With that said, I am surprised how filling my meals can be.

Jen decided she wanted to try my chicken/asparagus concoction for dinner tonight so I cooked up a double batch. It was very filling. My stomach was full for a couple of hours. The challenge is with so little in the stomach (I am guessing that my stomach has shrunk a bit) is that I don’t stay full as long.

I think I’ll go for another suppressant tomorrow. It would be nice to be perpetually hungry. continue reading...

strawberries Last night… while sleeping… I had a pretty rough night. I went to bed far hungrier than I have been in the last week. I also went to bed pretty late by comparison (about 12:30am). Although that isn’t any later than I did before the diet, I have felt more tired than when I eat lots of food. I woke up several times with hunger pangs. At one point, I couldn’t fall back asleep for about 30 minutes.

This morning, after sleeping about 7 hours, I was pretty fatigued. I was fatigued all morning long.

Interestingly, I didn’t take a nap and I am not that tired right now. I did have a moment or two of dizziness that was a bit odd. It was right after I had my afternoon snack. I ended up eating lunch at 1pm (I am trying for noon) and dinner at 8pm (I am trying for 6pm). I am a bit hungry now, but I am only staying up until about 11pm so hopefully it won’t be too much of a pain.

Pictured at the left is my breakfast. The white flecks you see is stevia. It tastes so good… good enough to be a dessert. continue reading...

true orange

You’d think the first week down with 9 pounds lost would get me excited… it does, but only a little. Today was a rough day. I didn’t cheat, but today I was more tempted than any other day.

I have been a little on the dizzy side and have had a headache all day. Part of me wonders if I am having caffeine and sugar withdrawals. Before the diet I would drink a lot of Coke and Dr. Pepper. Somedays I would drink as much as 64 ounces of pop (not hard when you get a large at McDonald’s on the way to the office and for lunch). Then, I quit cold turkey (mmmm, turkey).

So, you see the picture at the left for True Orange? I found this at Fred Meyer last week and have been experimenting with it a little. I figured out a way to mix it with stevia and carbonated water to create a pretty good diet drink. It is not sweet like a non-diet pop, but kind of tastes a little like Fresca. I put the recipe at the end of my stats on this post.

I took an appetite suppressant (half) about 3 hours ago and sure hope it kicks in. I figure tomorrow I am going to take a full one and see if I can get one day of reprieve from the pangs. My doctor said the first two weeks would likely be rough… he was right. Once I feel like I have a baseline of how successful this is (maybe 4 or 5 more days) I’ll start experimenting with the typical HCG Diet no-nos like Crystal Lite, sugar-free mint gum and mixed vegetables. Partly I am doing this diet to lose some weight, but partly I am doing this to see how the diet really works. I just don’t understand why artificial sweeteners would cause a problem, so I am going to test one thing at a time and track it for a few day to see what happens.

I also wonder what would happen if I had an extra portion of fruit every day… I mean could an extra 60 calories really have that much affect… we’ll see how that plays out as well… but not now when I am starving hungry :( but when I have a good baseline. continue reading...

asparagus and chickenI recycled the picture from the left from a few days ago. This chicken/asparagus meal is pretty darn good. (I didn’t recycle the food).

I was a little disappointed that I was so incredibly hungry yesterday, exhausted when I went to bed at 10:30, didn’t cheat at all on my food but woke up this morning with an increase in my weight.

Yeah… I grew.

I think (I hope) I am just retaining a little excess water. I had a little extra salt in my diet yesterday and last night I had some heartburn. Because I can’t have sugar, Tums are out. So, I used a little baking soda and water… heart burn went a way, but it is a lot of sodium just before bed. In addition, I didn’t drink as much water today.

Today, I drank a lot more water (over a gallon) and didn’t put salt on anything. As far as I can tell, my sodium intake today was virtually zero. Hopefully I’ll see the benefit on the scale in the morning. continue reading...

tomato Well, after gaining .2 pounds yesterday morning, I drank a lot more water (like more than a gallon total) and didn’t have any sodium. I didn’t add salt to any of my meals. As far as I can tell, I was 100% sodium free. I am assuming that helped because I lost more than a pound.

Today, I decided to go light on the salt and drink a lot of water just to be on the safe side. I think I might have had 1/2 teaspoon of salt the entire day.

I measured my gut today. I was at 48 inches when I started 9 days ago. This evening, I was at 47 inches… so, 10 pounds and an inch off my gut in 9 days is a pretty compelling motivation for this diet.

I did take a half an appetite suppressant in the morning and ended up eating my lunch and dinner late. At this point, I am only slightly hungry.

I think I need a few more days before I start testing too many different foods. continue reading...

burger and onionI am not sure how appetizing the picture at the left is. I decided not to eat my normal snack today so that I could have it at dinner instead. We had a bbq for the scouts tonight. I am the assistant scout master for the 11 year old scouts. It was pretty nice to have a more full meal than I usually do.

At the left is grilled onions, a burger and an apple. I put mustard on the burger… it was spectacular. I have 96% lean beef that I seasoned like I normally do for burgers. It was really good. Almost made me forget that I am on an unbearable diet. I should have put more mustard on (you know, that is zero calories and zero sugars/fats). If you have had my burgers, then you know how they taste.

Easter, tomorrow, will be interesting. We have friends coming for dinner. I’ll have to do the same kind of thing tomorrow so that I can eat more when everyone else is eating.

For lunch today, I tried my tomato soup with turkey instead. It was very good. I think I’ll use that for the soup from now on. I get just a little more food because the turkey is more lean. continue reading...

imageTake a look at all that food. Salad is a great way to go on this diet because you can eat a darn lot of it. You can see it dwarfs the chicken.

I took the whole meal picture because this was my Easter dinner. I had my lunch late (about 3pm) and I was absolutely stuffed. Then I had this for dinner and couldn’t finish it all. I couldn’t finish the chicken or the salad. I saved it thinking I would finish it later, but I just didn’t get hungry again. I counted the full calories since I don’t know what I actually ate, but I didn’t finish it all.

I have found that I don’t like chicken as much as I used to. I am going to have to find different ways to season it. Today was Mrs. Dash. The problem is that I love lemon pepper but the only lemon pepper I can find has sugar in it. Lemon and pepper individually just isn’t the same.

I did save my strawberries for dessert since my family and the friends that joined us for Easter dinner had strawberry shortcake. Sure, I was a little disappointed that I couldn’t have the cake or whipped cream, but look at my stats for the diet below… can’t mess that up. continue reading...

chicken and asparugusToday is the first day that I really don’t like this diet. I have been hungry on some days, but today I really don’t like it.

The reality is that I don’t like vegetables. I never have. Previous diets I have done (usually of my own making and not someone’s program) have been great for me because I find foods that are low calorie, taste great and I enjoy eating.

I don’t like vegetables and so I am running out of options.

The chicken/asparagus meal at the left I liked at first. I couldn’t finish it tonight. I am burnt on chicken and really burnt on asparagus.

I am going to have to find a way to change things up a bit or I am going to be in real trouble.

I retained a bit of water from yesterday so my weight actually went up. Even though I know it is impossible that I gained any fat, it is discouraging to see an increase on the scale. I reduced my salt to almost non-existent again and increased my water. I also decided to eat apple for both of my fruits because I heard that it helps with water retention.

I better see a drop on the scale tomorrow or I will be really upset.

Probably time to start experimenting a little… like replacing some vegetable with some fruit so that can eat something I like. continue reading...

burger and onion Today was a much better day than yesterday. I wasn’t hungry in the morning at all, so I didn’t even eat breakfast. I waited until lunch time and had turkey/tomato soup. It was really good.

For dinner, I had the burger and onions at the left. It was worth every single bite. If I eat that more often, then I won’t hate the diet so much.

Because I didn’t eat breakfast, I am going to have strawberries tonight as a bit of a dessert.

I went today to get my blood pressure taken. Normally my blood pressure is about 130 / 90… a little elevated, but not bad. Today, my blood pressure was 163 / 71… yikes. Unfortunately, I didn’t take my blood pressure before the diet started, so I don’t have a control to compare against. I am going to get this taken every few days now to see where it goes. I am hoping that just by losing weight, drinking a lot of water and cutting out so much sodium it will go down all by itself.

I lost weight again, so I am much happier with the diet than yesterday. continue reading...

strawberriesWhen I  eat foods I like, I like this diet. I think I have found my lunch staple. Today I did a beef/tomato soup, but it tastes great with turkey (ground) as well. Tomorrow, I’ll post the recipe. I think I may have it honed pretty well.

I am pleased with my weight loss. My appetite is regulating a bit. I am not starving between meals. In fact, I have found today that I didn’t really get hungry until I started eating. I am a little hungry now as I write this post, but overall I am not starving and feel like I am good to go.

One interesting thing about not cheating ever is that my temptations to cheat go way down. I am not as inclined to snitch even a little since I know that I can’t. Oh, the temptations are there… the kids had waffles tonight for dinner and I wanted about 14 of them loaded with syrup (mmmmmmm syrup). But alas, I can’t. So I didn’t. Still on track with the diet on the 14th day. continue reading...

turkey eat hamYou know, seeing the Easter ham on the table wasn’t hard for me. I even cut it up for everyone, put it on the serving dish and watched while everyone filled their bellies on the bounty.

I didn’t care.

It didn’t bother me.

What did bother me was wanted to make a ham sandwich or a ham and cheese omelet. That bone in ham is the best ham for leftovers.

However, there is one meal that I am eating on a regular basis that I really love. Turkey/tomato soup. Now, I have done it with beef, but I don’t like it any better and the turkey is a little better for me (I think).

At the end of this post, I have included a recipe for this 190 calorie wonder. It produces a little over a cup of soup. It is very filling all by itself. Even if you aren’t on a strict diet, it would be a great small meal. Add a piece of fruit and a whole wheat roll and you can have a pretty incredible meal for less than 400 calories.

I got my blood pressure today. 125 / 88… better than before. I am not sure why it was so out of whack a few days ago. I’ll check again the first of the week. continue reading...

donutNo, I didn’t eat any donuts.

Bethany had an activity at her school called, “Donuts for Dads.”

It was a lot of fun and a little tempting.

But, alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

She took my donut home to let Hyrum and Jenna share.

She was very cute to make sure that her teacher knew ahead of time that I was on a diet and that I wouldn’t have a donut. Basically, she told the teacher that I didn’t want to be fat anymore.

Tonight I am going camping so I am blogging a bit early. I am logging food I plan to eat since I have only had my lunch so far. Tomorrow I won’t be able to weigh in so tomorrow night’s blog will just be how the camping trip turned out.

My appetite has really regulated. I have a consistent hunger. What I mean is, think of the hunger you feel an hour or so before lunch that makes you say, “I can eat, but if I have to wait an hour, no big deal.” That is kind of what it feels like for me. So, I didn’t eat breakfast so that I can eat a little more on my campout tonight. After I ate lunch, my level of hunger didn’t change, but it is not overly concerning.

It is also interesting to me that I don’t feel like I want to munch like I used to. I don’t feel compelled to go get a snack because I want one. The longer I am on the diet, the easier it is to maintain the diet. continue reading...

campfireI went camping, as mentioned in yesterday’s post. I ended up not eating my evening vegetable so I edited the post and adjusted my calories. Yesterday was the first day on the diet that I didn’t eat all my calories.

I don’t feel like I missed them.

This morning was a little tough… not too bad. My patrol (it was a scout training) cooked some cinnamon rolls and breakfast pizza. They didn’t want to listen to me so I let them have their way. Both were burned on the bottom and gooey on top.

I didn’t miss much.

Since I wasn’t home to weigh in this morning, I wasn’t going to include my stats like usual. However, when I got home, I weighed myself and was surprised I had lost weight since during the day I gain weight with food and water I take in. So, I have included my stats today, anyway. We’ll see what it really means in the morning.

It was a hot day (well, not really, but I was in the sun all day). When I was in the sun I only had 2 liters of water. I was a little concerned that I might be retaining water because of it so, since I have returned home at about 6pm (now being 11pm), I have had almost another 3 liters of water.

So, I may be swimming a bit tonight :) continue reading...

chicken onion apple After my camping trip, I wasn’t sure how much weight I would lose. I was hoping to get down to 245… I got down to 243. I couldn’t believe it.

Oh, I know what people will say… “It was all water weight.”

I say that if it is water weight that keeps coming off, then I am glad it is because I need to bring my weight down. But, as long as my body fat percentage keeps coming down, too, then I won’t be concerned.

I had a more full dinner tonight by not having breakfast or a snack. It is amazing how much food 250 calories is, pictured at the left.

My dessert was just incredible. I had some frozen raspberries. I put some stevia on them and let them thaw and macerate for about an hour. The juice it created was just spectacular. It was better than just about any dessert I have had in a long time (I mean much longer than 18 days:)).

If you haven’t tried stevia as a replacement for sugar, you really need to try it out. It really makes dieting easier. I couldn’t do this diet without that. It takes the edge off of the diet. If you need sugar on your cereal in the morning, in your tea or in other of your foods, you really need to try it out. I have tried Splenda (that claims it tastes like sugar because it is made from sugar) and it doesn’t even compare. Stevia is too expensive to be a good replacement for baking (I think), but to sweeten drinks and oatmeal, it is great. continue reading...

smiley cowWell, 19 days down and I am feeling pretty good about this diet. I am surprised. The first two weeks were really rough. Now, I am getting into a groove with it.

I love the success I am seeing on the scale. Even though I would really love to eat more and I have a dull hunger more often than not, I love to wake up in the morning and see more weight gone.

Today, when I got home from work, Jen was cooking grilled cheese sandwiches. Mmm that sounded good. Then, after our family home evening, they had Chocolate no-bake cooking. Mmm that sounded good. Then I saw on the counter some chocolate donuts gems. Mmm I really love those.

Remembering my goals helped me get through it.

So, for dinner, I had a burger and onions. I also made my simple diet drink. Certainly it wasn’t as good as what I was giving up, but it did just fine for me.

I’ll be happy when the diet is over and I can start eating again, but seeing the results on the scale makes it worth while for me.

I keep thinking that I am going to start experimenting a bit with typical HCG no-nos, but I am afraid that my progress will slow. Perhaps later this week I’ll chomp on a piece of gum and see what happens. I can’t imagine that a piece of Extra can have a negative impact, but I don’t know. That’s why I really should try and see what happens.

Oh… I took my blood pressure again today. It was 125/86. I don’t know what happened when it was out of whack. It seems to be back to my normal. I am hoping that I can get it just a touch lower through losing my flab. continue reading...

mustardI have found a number of ways to be creative on the diet. Mustard is one of the best ways to get additional flavor and add moisture. If you like sauces, you ought to try mustard. Most mustards have zero calories, zero fat and zero sugar.

You’ll have to be careful because I am sure that some will have sugar and fat. For example, honey mustard wouldn’t be a good fit for this diet. However, even honey mustard tends to be low in calories so after the diet is over it a good way to get some moisture in your sandwich and much better than mayo.

The other day I put this stone ground mustard on my chicken. I don’t normally like brown mustards, but the flavor was really nice for a change. I usually put my almost-famous bar-b-que sauce on my chicken and can’t during this diet. So, it is nice to have something to put on it. continue reading...

beef onion tomato I figured that I have done this for 3 weeks now so I can try a little experimentation with the diet. The HCG protocol says you can’t mix veggies. That doesn’t make a bit of sense to me so I want to put it to the test.

For today, I decided the first experiment would be to mix it up only slightly. I had tomatoes for lunch so I figured I would try reducing my normal evening vegetable and add some tomato. You have to admit that the dinner at the left doesn’t look too bad. It is amazing to me that the entire meal at the left is only 190 calories.

I won’t judge my result from one day changing this up a bit. I’ll do the same thing tomorrow and maybe on Friday to see what the results are over a few days. Once I feel that I know, I’ll decide if I want to test something else. I want to test sugar free gum and crystal lite, but I wanted to try different combos of veggies first.

goat and horseI am back on the horse again (like the pic? does this make me a goat?). I guess I didn’t really fall off, but I wanted to when I gained a pound yesterday.

I was a little concerned when I gained a pound yesterday. I am not sure if it was related to mixing some veggies but at least it wasn’t fat. Gaining 1 pound and then the next day losing 2 is okay with me. It just illustrates that I was holding on to some water.

I have see a few blogs of people that are on this diet and are struggling with water weight. I thought that I would share what I do every time I think I am holding on to water. I don’t know if it is right, but it works.

First, I eat my fruits as apples. Second, I cut out most or all of the salt. Third, I increase my water drinking (up to a gallon of water).

I know it sounds weird to increase water. Jen had a doctor explain once that one of the reasons your body will retain water is it thinks it is not getting enough so it starts storing water like a camel. When you are properly hydrated, your body doesn’t need to store as much water.

My scale shows me my percentage of water in my body. As I am losing weight, I am finding that percentage increase. I don’t know what that means, but I think it is interesting. continue reading...

I figure that if I am going to be hungry on this diet and forsake all the good foods my family is eating (well, good as in good tasting) that I better see daily results.

appleI grew… and not in a good way. I added another 1 pound to my already substantial girth this morning (well, it is less substantial than it was 3 weeks ago).

It is a little frustrating to be extremely strict on a diet and find negative results.

Yesterday I said that if I was stagnating that I would eat nothing but apples for all my calories. So, today, I have had nothing but apples. I can have 33 oz of apples for 495 calories.

I actually kind of enjoyed it. I enjoyed the simplicity of it all. For about 8 oz, I heated it up with stevia and cinnamon on top and ate that while the family had my favorite baked chicken dish and dutch oven potatoes.

I have 10 oz left to go on the apples for today. I just cut them all up and I am going to snack on them and watch a little TV. As a reference, the apple in the picture above is just less than 5 oz. I usually eat just less than an apple for one of my fruits every day.

I got to thinking that after this HCG diet is over, I will definitely be eating a lot more fruit. I am toying with the idea of planning one day a week where I eat only fruit. Or maybe a couple of days per week where I get 50% of my calories from just fruit. Regardless, going forward, I want to get a larger percentage of my calories from fruit. I think that the sweetness in the fruit helps to subside sugar cravings. continue reading...

hiro nakamura i did itSo, I was amazed before I went to bed last night that I was down a pound from yesterday morning.

I knew that I was going to see something big on the scale (yes, that was a pun, because my big butt was on the scale).

The apple diet did the trick. One full day of apples (495 calories worth) kicked my system into overdrive.

I lost just over four pounds over night.

I know, some of it is that I was holding on to some extra water. But, if I am holding on to some water then it can be discouraging because the scale doesn’t go the direction I want it to go… so, I am good losing that much water.

I mentioned yesterday that a full day of apples was kind of enjoyable.

I went back to my old standbys for lunch and dinner. I have found two meals that I really like, so I am not changing it up. I am not changing for two reasons. First, I like what I am eating. Second, I don’t have to think about it. I know how much turkey, beef, tomato and onion I can eat and I know how to prepare it in a way I like it. I figure as long as I don’t get sick of it, I’ll keep using the same foods over an over again. There would be a greater variety of veggies I’d eat if I liked veggies. I have eaten a bit of asparagus, spinach, sugar snap peas, lettuce and celery, but I get tired of them by the end of the meal. I love my soup and my grilled burger and onions. continue reading...

smileyWell, I decided to take inventory of my HCG injections. I wanted to start planning out when I can eat again.

As of tonight, I only have 11 left.

Hurray!

The protocol normally lasts 40 injections, but for some reason I am going to end up at a total of 36. One day I had a needle pop off and I lost all the fluid. When I tried to get my first few injections from a new vial, it was dripping a bit. I didn’t realize I had lost four dosages worth, but I don’t think I am complaining. I am losing, on average now, almost a pound per day. So, four dosages means less than 4 pounds… I can handle it.

It is starting to boggle my mind a little bit to think about how much food I’ll be eating when I will be at my maintenance diet of 2,500 calories per day. Right now, I am getting plenty of food. I am not hungry very much. Tonight I didn’t get to eat dinner until 8:30pm. I was pretty hungry by the time I at only 1/4 pound of food, but it was very filling.

Sure, I know that the medication is helping to suppress the appetite, but thinking about eating five times what I am eating now is significant. Think about eating five times what you eat now and you’ll kind of understand.

So, I have two weeks left before I start to increase my calories. I am anxious to see how it all shapes up for me.

I did decide to post my entire journey from start to finish with a graph of my experience on this page. continue reading...

cow appleI woke up this morning with a little extra weight. Rather than letting my weight simmer a little, I decided to take the bull by the horns and try to preempt holding on to too much water.

So, I had a mostly apple day today.

I was going to do a full apple day, but I wanted strawberries in the morning.

Then, I was going to finish the day with apples but I was too hungry. So, I finished the day with burger and onion… I ended up 35 calories over… if that is cheating then I don’t want to be honest.

One thing that I have noticed in the last 36 hours is I am starting to get cravings. Today I had a strong craving for a quesadilla with sour cream and salsa. I am at least 5 weeks before I can even attempt something like that. I hope I don’t get too many cravings as I try to reintroduce foods. continue reading...

beef onion tomatoSince I was down again, I decided to try out the mixing of veggies again. If I gain weight in the morning, I am going to consider it a failure… even though it probably just makes me retain water.

Just getting an additional flavor in my meal, even with the same number of calories, is incredible. I don’t know if adding tomato to my onion is really mixing since I had tomatoes earlier in the day, but it sure tasted good. I added some mustard and enjoyed every single bite.

I can see how I can eat within 2000 calories a day if my permanent diet can contain foods like this. continue reading...

imageWeight loss has slowed. I don’t know if it is from the onion and tomato combo or what, but I am still on the way down.

Right now, my gut is down four inches. Clothes that were tight before fit great now. Clothes that fit great before are really comfortable.

I haven’t worn a belt in a long time because I haven’t needed it. Now, I can get my pants on without even unbuttoning them so I need a belt.

Although the weight has slowed, it is still coming off.

My goal was to lose 50 pounds during the six weeks of the diet. That won’t happen. However, I’ll end up losing over 30 pounds (or should if I keep losing for the next week and a half). That is pretty darn good. continue reading...

strawberries raspberriesI am officially tired of the diet.

I am starting to get more and more cravings.

Today, Jen cooked grilled cheese for the kids. I wanted it.

Tonight, I had my burger (with onions and tomatoes cause I just wanted the tomatoes) and I cooked hot dogs for the kids. I cut up Hyrum’s hot dog and had a little of the juice on my fingers. I licked it. I wish I had it. This was after a bratwurst craving last night.

Earlier in the week, I craved a quesadilla, pizza, peanut butter, chocolate milk, etc.

I am going to hold on and see it through, but a month down and I am starting to get cravings that I thought were all but gone.

I had the berries (pictured at left) with a little stevia sprinkled to get some good, sweet juice for my dessert tonight. It was very good. Very filling and incredibly tasty. It would have been much tastier on top of ice cream or with whipped cream on top.

Even though my weight was less this morning by only a little (I think I am holding water again), I still think the diet is worth it. Jen asked me today if I would do this HCG protocol again after knowing what I know now. I simply said that losing over 30 pounds in six weeks is worth it. I would probably lose more if I was as strict as the program requires, but, hey, I am losing a lot of weight.

Also, my gut is down a total of 4.5 inches right now. That is pretty compelling. continue reading...

dinnerMy weight loss has slowed a little. Rather than waiting another day to see what happens and then have an apple day, I decided to have a modified apple today today.

So, I replaced my lunch with apples.

I then replaced half my dinner veggies with apples.

I figured since I was only eating 20 calories of veggies that I’d throw a few onions on my tomatoes… mmm good.

You can see the meal at the left and it is a lot of food. It is only 230 calories. It was really nice to have that full of a meal. I had the other apples spaced throughout the day, so I didn’t feel like I was really giving up quantity.

If you think about 190 calories for a normal meal and a normal portion of an apple is 4 oz, I can have three extra portions of apple to replace one meal… so, I had plenty of food.

We’ll see what the scale does in the morning.

Still tired of the diet, but I’ll keep plugging away. Although, even though I only have a week left of injections, the diet isn’t really over because I’ll have to start reintroducing foods… but at least that means I get to start eating more foods… albeit gradually. continue reading...

lemons are pretty goodWell, after a “mostly apple” day, my weight didn’t drop as much as I expected. Seems that my weight loss has slowed a bit. I supposed I shouldn’t complain that it did drop nearly a pound. I think it just means that I wasn’t retaining as much water as I thought over the last few days.

I don’t know if I have slowed because of mixing tomatoes and onions or not. One thing I wonder might cause it is my body is starting to get used to the same foods. Because I really don’t like veggies, I have found two (onions and tomatoes) that I like and I just eat those same things over and over again. I haven’t gotten sick of what I am eating so I just keep eating it.

You might be wondering about the lemons image at the left. On Saturday I wanted to try some lemon in my soup. I read that I can have the juice of a lemon with my diet. I have a bottle of lemon juice that is always in the refrigerator. I noticed on the side of the bottle that you can make a lemonade with the juice, water and sugar. I decided to try it with stevia. I put an ounce or so of lemon juice with some stevia in about 12 ounces of water… presto… a great lemonade. So, I had some on Saturday, yesterday and today.

I am sure the lemonade adds some calories. It is possible that it has slowed me down, but I doubt it. Even 3 ounces of lemon juice only adds 23 calories. If it does slow me down for consuming 23 calories too much, then I’ll live with it.

In reality, one of the components of this diet that I just don’t get is exactly 500 calories. Why not 475 or 525? Why not 507? 500 just seems to round of a number to be scientifically the exact number that works where other numbers won’t. With that said, I have been very careful along the entire diet to ensure that I was very good with my calories. Here, towards the end, I am ready to move on… so, I’ll fudge the data a little bit and won’t count my lemonade. continue reading...

foodFood.

I am have only five injections left and I am staring to think about the food I can eat.

Ice cream.

Corn dogs.

Hamburgers.

Quesadillas.

The concern that I have is that I will just want to eat and not stop eating.

I hope that I am building some habits. I think that I am.

I mentioned before that I am formalizing my strategy to keep the weight off for a change. The kids had corn dogs for lunch and I love corn dogs. I realized, that if I am smart about the quantities I eat, I won’t have to cut it down. I realized that I can have two corn dogs and some fruit and be under 500 calories for a meal. If I have three squares a day, then a 2000 calorie day isn’t out of the question and still be able to eat some things that I like.

So, I want food.

It is weird to think about the quantity of food that I will be able to eat when I am doing with everything on this diet. But, I am looking forward to being able to snitch on occasion… as long as I am smart about it. continue reading...

30 pounds offI crossed a milestone today.

I am officially down more than 30 pounds.

Not bad for 35 days, huh?

Having only 21 pounds left for my goal is a nice feeling. It is nice to know that I am able to fit better in my clothes and feel better about myself.

A lot of people who know me would never have thought I was fat. I have always hidden my weight really well. However, losing 30 pounds makes me feel a lot better. Not only feel better about myself, but simply feel better.

Being so heavy was just uncomfortable. Having that extra weight all over my body makes it harder to do everything. It is harder to walk and run. It is even uncomfortable to sit and lie down.

I have a bit more to go, but it is amazing how fast I can feel better about my body. It has already been worth being very strict about my diet. Although I have been a little lax a few times, for the most part, I ended up being more strict than I thought I could be. continue reading...

My body is down 31 pounds.

baby lotionI neglected to blog yesterday. I ended up going camping last night (well, it was planned). I went with the Boy Scouts. I was going to blog before I left, but ran out of time.

Because of that, I also didn’t get to weigh myself this morning. I weighed myself after I got back, but that really doesn’t count because it was in the afternoon.

As a result, no blog yesterday and no weighing in today.

Don’t worry, yesterday I stuck to my normal 500 calorie regime. I did cook my beef and onions as a tin foil dinner… what a nice difference. The vital stats below are from yesterday’s measurement.

Today, was a little different story. I cooked my soup for lunch over a camp stove… really good. I got home and decided that I really didn’t want to cook. So, I just had some apples. As a result, my calorie intake today was less than usual.

One problem that I have found is that my hands are getting very dry. About a week ago, my doctor suggested baby lotion. I am using it sparingly but on the campout my hands started to crack a little… so, when I got home, I wasn’t so sparing on the lotion and now they feel better.

Tomorrow is my last injection.

Hurray! continue reading...

image Today was my last injection. I ended up with only 36 of them, but I am not complaining. It is liberating to know that I won’t be sticking myself any longer.

It is especially liberating to know that in three days I will be starting to increase my calories again.

To the left is a picture of my son, Hyrum. I decided to include this picture of him to give a little perspective on how much weight I have lost so far on this diet. My goal is to lose another 10 pounds by the end of June, but, to date, I have lost the equivalent weight of Hyrum.

Today I decided to shake up my diet a little… I had the same amount of vegetables… onions and tomatoes but I had half of each at lunch and dinner. It was a nice flavor change.

I think I am going to keep posting daily for another week and then every few days as I make some strides. I have about a six-week reintroduction diet that I am going to follow. That will put me nearly to the end of June. If all goes as planned, by the end of the six week reintroduction program I’ll be down almost 45 pounds with only 6 or 7 pounds left for my first goal of losing 51 pounds. continue reading...

butterWhile I am working toward increasing my calories, I thought that I’d put into perspective how much weight I have lost so far.

Take a look at the picture to the left. What is visible is 30 pounds of butter. Each of the boxes on the left is 1 pound of butter (you see there are a couple of half boxes). I have lost four more pounds than shown in the picture.

It think it is a pretty strong visual to think that all of that was in my body and now is no longer there after only 40 days.

When you are carrying the weight, you don’t really comprehend how much you are carrying because it is spread out throughout your body.

When you lose this much weight this fast, you notice it’s absence and really enjoy it.

I did go a little crazy on my dinner tonight… mixed vegetables… I had tomatoes, lettuce and green onions. I even had some salsa (heaven forbid). It was really good.

I rode my bike to work… 4.5 miles each way. It was a really nice ride. I think I’ll do that more often. It burns calories so hopefully I’ll offset the “mixed” veggies. continue reading...

dinnerSo, it’s been a couple of days since posting. Yesterday, I started mixing my veggies and increase calories. I only increased by about 20 calories… I want to sneak up on it.

Today, I increased another 30 calories.

Dinner on the left was great. The lettuce was a little older, but it was nice to have more variety in one meal. It was very filling. Even that meal on the left was only 190 calories. I didn’t eat any more calories for dinner… I just mixed it up a bit.

So, today is my second day since the increase in calories and I am really loving the loss of weight. This morning, I was down another full pound (2 full pounds since Monday).

They say that during the reintroduction period you won’t lose weight… in fact, some say to plan on gaining a pound or two. Well, I haven’t come this far to just stop losing weight until the reintroduction us over. My goal is to keep losing during this period. I only have 16 pounds left to hit my goal of 210 pounds.

For my meal reporting below, I am not going to include all the ounces on mixed foods. I am just going to include the total calories for my mixed foods.

Also, I am going to only post on this diet now every couple of days so that I can move on to other subjects. continue reading...

jenna and ianWell, I have been off the injections for a little over a week and I am still losing weight.

At the left is a picture of Jenna and Ian. They are my two youngest. Ten days ago, I mentioned that I lost the equivalent weight of my 4 year old.

As of now, I have lost the equivalent of my 3 year old plus my 4 month old.

So, now, I have lost two kids :)

I have been slow in increasing my calories. Yesterday I only had about 630 calories. Today, I’ll end up with only about 660 calories.

I am increasing a little more slowly than recommended. I figure that I should take advantage of my body not being that hungry to lose as much weight as possible.

It seems that I’ll be done with this diet beyond my goal. I only have 12 pounds left to go. My goal for the 12 weeks (6 weeks on the HCG and 6 weeks of reintroduction) was to lose a total of 51 pounds.

I may actually hit that weight a little early. continue reading...

image Well, it has been 10 weeks since I started the HCG diet. I have been off the reintroduction period for a couple of weeks and eating healthy every day. I found a really cool app called LoseIt! for my iPhone that really makes tracking calories very easy.

Now, I exercise four days per week and ride my bike about 30 miles each week to and from work a few days a week. For the first time in my life, I feel like my goals are in site.

imageYou can see the before and after pictures and see how I did. I haven’t lost any weight in the last 3 weeks so I lost about 48 pounds and 7.5 inches in my gut is only about 8 weeks.

I thought that I would include a few things that I found on this diet that really helped me out.

For Starters

We have a nice digital scale that we bought a number of years ago that also measures our body fat percentage. It was very helpful to see the change in the body fat at the same time… a little more motivating.

Through the diet, I had a simple $4 scale from Wal-Mart to weigh my food. Since then, I purchased a digital food scale. It has made measuring food so much easier. When you get calorie light foods (like lettuce, spinach or celery) on the diet, a small scale is really a pain. After the diet is over and you can mix veggies, a good digital scale is easy because you can reset zero and as you build a salad, for example. Now, I still weigh everything and can do it very quickly and easily.

So, if you are going to do this, I recommend getting a good digital scale for your weight and a good digital scale for your food. I also recommend getting an iPhone or an iPod Touch and get the LoseIt! app… it will be worth it when it is easy to track your food. continue reading...
